Tourism in the Argentine Northwest

The northwest of Argentina is a different region from the rest of the country that can be visited very easily by hiring a complete travel package including air travel to the main cities such as Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán and Catamarca.  The climate in this very touristic region of Argentina is arid, dry and hot. The first inhabitants of northwestern Argentina were tribes related to the Inca civilization. The most important were the calchaquíes, omaguacas and atacamas. The Argentine northwest has an important cultural, anthropological and historical legacy.

NOA population

The total population of the NOA is approximately 2,784,821 inhabitants, that is to say, little more than 8.28% of the total population of the country, according to the figures of the National Population and Housing Census of 1991. A third of it is in the province of Tucumán, the one with the smallest relative area, and a quarter in that of Salta. The population density is 7.4 inhabitants / km2, that is, 15% lower than the average for the country.

Geographic situation

The Northwest borders Chile and Bolivia, comprising the Argentine provinces of Salta, Jujuy and Tucumán up to the sub-Andean mountain ranges, Catamarca, La Rioja and part of Santiago del Estero up to the north of San Juan. This region has as a remarkable characteristic the conformation of different environments, so it can be divided into several different zones: Puna, Valleys and Quebradas.
